Seven tips for web text / content writing.
Learn from the seven practical tips which will help you with the writing of web text or content.
1. Do not use texts that have been written for paper
People that are surfing have no patience and read badly. The real "text block reading" is slower via a monitor/screen. The paragraphs and sentences must thus be shorter. Every four or five lines there must be intermediate headers.
2. Be careful with color in text blocks
Sometimes the surfer is looking for lots of complicated information. Make sure it is possible to quickly make a printout. It is easier to read this way, especially in black & white.
3. Make sure hyperlinks are easily identifiable
On many websites links are not immediately recognized as such. Sadly this costs you a whole bunch of clicks. Web surfers have no patience and want to feel like they remain in control. They want to know what happens when.
4. Hardly write about your organization
This is one of the reasons to depart your website right away. Headers like
"we" or "us" or the name of the brand are thus already a risk. Your surfing customer or prospect has questions or needs and (still) no need for information about you. This will come later.
5. Keep this very short or omit it entirely
Text ads on Google may be maximum 3 lines. Including the header sentence. Apparently fewer clicks are made on longer ads and Google lives off these clicks. The average sentence length of an optimal web text is merely 9 words. In this article words are included which consist on average of 5,49 symbols per word and sentences consisting on average of 7,8 words per sentence.
6. Remain in conversation with the reader
The web surfer is having a dialog with you. He is asking questions in his mind. You are supplying the answers. If someone clicks through then the dialog must continue in a logical manner. This also applies if someone arrives on your website through an ad, a banner or a button. Do not let him or her arrive at your home page but prepare different landing pages.
7. Tell the reader what to do
In order to get a response you need to ask a question. Use conspicuous action buttons and response links. Prepare response pages on your site. Award swift reactions. Literally ask for a reaction.
